Once a summer residence for monks dating back hundreds of years, this tastefully restored five-bedroom country house is situated in rolling countryside close to both sea and mountains in a region where the warmth and hospitality of the Italian people survives.
With a 10×4 metre pool in a large garden, the house, which sleeps nine, has a hand-made and spacious maple kitchen, comfortable beamed sitting room and three bathrooms, plus a downstairs toilet. There are terracotta tiles throughout with a loggia for shaded outside eating and a gallery on the first floor with extensive views.
The house sits alone at the end of a white gravel road and is on three floors in more than an acre of land, including an olive grove, surrounded by farmland and woods. The pool has an extensive tiled area for sunbathing with umbrellas and olive trees for shade.
The ancient town of Loro Piceno on a hill opposite the house is the home of vino cotto, a delicious dessert wine, and the area has many excellent but inexpensive restaurants. The peace is only disturbed by the melodic chiming of Loro Piceno’s church bells or the singing of the birds.
Beaches or the majestic Sibillini mountains are 40 minutes away. The extensive ruins of the ancient Roman city of Urbs Salvia are less than 10 minutes from the house and the area is dotted with hill towns like those in Umbria and Tuscany, but less well known and developed. Art treasures wait to be discovered in little-known old churches and festivals light up local hill towns during the summer.
One hour from Ancona airport. Also accessible from Bologna, Rome, Pisa and Pescara. Nearby are the ancient towns of Macerata — which hosts a renowned summer opera festival and Tolentino. Ascoli Piceno, the jewel of the Marche region, is about an hour away.
